Lawyer who led Karen Read’s criminal defense officially joins team for civil case

Alan Jackson, the prominent criminal defense lawyer who led Karen Read's criminal defense , has officially joined the team of attorneys representing her in a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of her boyfriend, John O'Keefe.

Along with Jackson, a judge granted motions to admit two other lawyers, Elizabeth Little and Caleb Mason, from Jackson's Los Angeles, California-based law firm to represent Read in the civil case. Because none of the lawyers are licensed to practice in Massachusetts, they required court approval to represent Read in the civil case.

Little was also a member of the team that represented Read during her two criminal trials, which concluded with her acquittal on all charges connected to O'Keefe's death in June.

The lawsuit, filed in Plymouth County last year, accuses Read of backing her car into O'Keefe on the morning of Jan. 29, 2022. It's the same accusation Read faced during her criminal trials, and was ultimately cleared of.

A hearing on the lawsuit — and a recent motion filed by Read's team to dismiss some of the claims — is scheduled for early next week.

In a brief statement provided to Boston 25 News , Jackson said he was proud to stand with Little as they joined Read in her "relentless pursuit of justice.

"Karen's courage in confronting abuse of power and demanding the truth is unwavering — and so are we. This fight isn't over. Not until every lie is exposed in every wrong is made right," he told the station.

Jackson was instrumental in pushing Read's claim that she was being framed for O'Keefe's death. Prosecutors claimed Read hit O'Keefe with her car on Jan. 29, 2022, outside the Canton home of a fellow Boston Police officer.

Thus far, Read has hired six lawyers to represent her in the civil action, not counting Jackson or Little.

Damon Seligson , Charles Waters and Aaron D. Rosenberg , who work at the firm Sheehan Phinney , all joined Read's defense team last month, according to court filings.

They joined three lawyers from the firm Melick & Porter , who already represented Read: Christopher George , William L. Keville Jr. and Marissa K. Palladini .
