Lithium-ion battery explosion causes fires in Ludlow home
LUDLOW — An electric scooter battery explosion caused a house fire in Ludlow on Tuesday, the State Fire Marshal's Office determined.
Firefighters were called around 4 p.m. Tuesday to the fire, the state Fire Marshal's Office said in a statement. No one was hurt, but the home was damaged and its residents are displaced.

State and town fire investigators found that the electric scooter battery had not been charging properly and in an attempt to find a solution, an "aftermarket" charger bought online was used.
"Always use the manufacturer's recommended equipment when charging lithium-ion batteries," State Fire Marshal Jon Davine said in a statement.
"Aftermarket accessories may not be compatible with the battery and have been associated with a rising number of fires," Davine said.
If a lithium-ion battery does not charge, dispose of it at a hazardous waste drop-off site or a battery recycling site, he said.
