Live updates: US-Iran talks to resume in Pakistan; DOJ drops Powell probe
Trump administration envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will head Saturday to Pakistan for a new round of talks with the Iranians, the White House announced Friday. Vice President Vance will not join them but is on standby.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine gave a brief update on the war in Iran first thing on Friday, three days after President Trump indefinitely extended a ceasefire .
Hegseth said 34 Iranian ships have been turned around since the naval blockade took effect. And he did not deny The Washington Post report that it could take six months for the U.S. military to clear the Strait of Hormuz of mines laid by the Iranian military.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Friday morning that her office would drop its investigation into the Federal Reserve and Chair Jerome Powell over its costly headquarters renovations. That move should open a path for the confirmation of Powell’s expected successor, Kevin Warsh.
She said her office instead asked the Fed’s inspector general “to scrutinize the building costs overruns — in the billions of dollars — that have been borne by taxpayers.”
Trump will travel Friday to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where he’ll attend the Republican National Committee’s spring retreat.
