Live updates: Hegseth, House Democrats clash; Supreme Court delivers setback to Voting Rights Act
The Supreme Court has issued a 6-3 opinion that strikes down the 2024 Louisiana redistricting map as an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander,” a significant challenge to the Voting Rights Act. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion. Justice Elena Kagan led the dissent, which she read aloud in court.
The court’s final oral arguments of the term followed, weighing the Trump administration’s efforts to curtail temporary legal protections for hundreds of thousands of noncitizens.
The House Armed Services Committee is questioning Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine on Wednesday morning as the Iran war hits 60 days with no imminent conclusion. It’s their first of two days of hearings .
Hegseth railed against the long wars pursued by past administrations as the U.S. war in Iran approached the 60-day mark and Trump signaled a continued standoff in the Strait of Hormuz.
He said during his opening remarks that the “biggest adversary we face at this point are the reckless, feckless and defeatist words of congressional Democrats and some Republicans.”
The Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday morning advanced the nomination of Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve by a 13-11 vote.
Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at the likely last meeting with Jerome Powell as chair. He’ll stay on the Fed board after his term expires next month.
