A man was hit in the face with a bottle as he was robbed in a South End grocery store on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at 4:40 p.m. at Liriano Grocery, located at 1813 Washington St., according to the Boston Police Department.

An officer who was working in the area was flagged down by a man with apparent injuries, police said, who said he’d just been robbed by two other men at the local grocery store.

The man said one of the thieves punched him in the head and stole his cash, while the other hit him in the face with a bottle, according to police. They also threatened the man with a “small black object” that he thought was a gun, police said.

After getting a description of the two men from the victim, officers spotted them around the corner from the grocery shop, at the intersection Massachusetts Avenue and Washington Street, the department said.

The men tried to run away in separate directions when officers approached them but were arrested after short foot chases — one in the area of Shawmut Avenue and Pelham Street and the other near Tremont Street and Upton Street.

The men were identified as Jahar Pinkett, 42, of Dorchester and Anthony Crumbley, 29, of Boston, police said. Pinkett was found with cash in the amount reported stolen and also had a bag with what police believed to be methamphetamine, but no gun was found.

Both men were charged with armed robbery. Crumbley was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the bottle, while Pinkett was charged with assault and battery and possession of a class B substance.

Pinkett also had an active warrant out of Boston Municipal Court for violation of an abuse prevention order, police said.

Both men will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
