A man was shot and wounded in the parking lot of a north Minneapolis funeral home Friday afternoon when an altercation escalated to gunfire, according to police.

Just after 12:45 p.m., the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a reported shooting outside Estes Funeral Chapel, located at 2201 Plymouth Ave. N. in the Willard-Hay neighborhood.

Officers arrived to discover evidence of gunfire and multiple people who were gathered for a funeral.

About three miles from the funeral home, officers stopped a vehicle that had reportedly left the scene near 10th Street and Third Avenue South in downtown Minneapolis, and identified a man in his 40s with an apparent gunshot wound that's not believed to be life-threatening.

The man was transported by ambulance to the nearby Hennepin County Medical Center.

"Preliminary information indicates that an altercation in the parking lot escalated to gunfire, resulting in the man being shot," MPD said. "The injured man appears to be a bystander."

Across the street from the funeral home, NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center temporarily went on lockdown as a result of the shooting.
