A new report by the state auditor's Bureau of Special Investigations details nearly $12 million in public assistance fraud in the 2025 budget year.

The largest portion of that fraud, $4.1 million, was found in the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The program is often known by its former name, "food stamps."

Investigators completed 4,179 investigations during the budget year that ended June 30, 2025, state Auditor Diana DiZoglio's office said in a statement.

Investigators also found more than $1.3 million in fraud in MassHealth, as Medicaid is known in the Bay State.

The report's release comes more than a month after federal investigators charged two Mattapan bodega owners with $7 million in food assistance fraud

DiZoglio's investigators also completed 22 civil recoveries, clawing back nearly $800,000 in misspent public money, DiZoglio's office said in its statement.

The work by DiZoglio's investigators also resulted in two guilty pleas to welfare fraud charges, one by a Hyannis woman involving more than $140,000 and another by a Gloucester woman totaling more than $20,000.

For countless residents across the Commonwealth, these programs offer access to everyday items they need, including food and medical services," DiZoglio said.

"Through the work of our fraud examiners, we continue to help ensure they operate with transparency, accountability, and equity," she continued. "Our team will continue to work to ensure taxpayer dollars are used effectively and that resources are available to those who truly need and qualify for them."

People can report potential fraud by calling the investigations bureau at 617-727-6771 or by visiting its website .
