Mass. braces for cold, blustery Friday, weekend freezing rain risk
Cold and blustery conditions are expected across Massachusetts on Friday as forecasters eye the chance for freezing rain over the weekend.
Temperatures will hover in the mid-40s for most of the state, according to the National Weather Service, while the Berkshires and northern parts of Central Massachusetts may barely reach 40.
Gusty winds will make it feel even colder during the day, though those blustery conditions should ease overnight.
Boston will see increasing clouds on Friday with a high of 46 degrees and a low of 29. Hyannis will reach 45 for the high and 31 for the low.
A slight chance of rain and show showers are expected in Pittsfield in the afternoon, where highs may just reach 40 with a low of 22. Springfield will be mostly sunny with a high of 46 and a low of 25, while Worcester will also have mostly sunny skies, hitting 43 for the high and 26 for the low.
However, temperatures may drop to the low and mid-20s across most of the state in the nighttime, while some parts along the coastline could remain a hair warmer.
Sunshine will start the day on Saturday before rainclouds roll in the afternoon. The precipitation is projected to start on Saturday night and spread eastward.
Forecasters warn that those in higher terrains are at risk for freezing rain when the storm begins — though conditions aren’t expected to become icy as temperatures rise overnight.
The rain will end by Sunday morning as the cold front moves out of the state. Temperatures will initially be high in the 50s but will fall into the 30s by the afternoon, and wind gusts could pick up to 40 mph by late morning.
