A Canton man is facing charges after crashing his car into another vehicle during a car chase with Stoughton police on Friday, according to police.

Helohim Francilme, 20, has been charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in property damage and failure to stop for police in connection with the incident, Stoughton police said in a press release Tuesday . He is also facing one count each of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating a motor vehicle with a revoked registration and three other driving infractions.

On Aug. 29, a Stoughton police officer on patrol in the area of West and Central Streets noticed a black Jeep Grand Cherokee that was known to police from prior interactions shortly before 6:10 p.m., police said. The officer tried to pull the car over due to it its revoked registration, but the driver sped away towards Pearl Street.

The officer initially chased the Jeep, but stopped his pursuit when the Jeep passed the Canton town line, police said. A Stoughton sergeant who was also familiar with the Jeep and areas it is often seen in decided to look for it on Island Street in Stoughton in case it returned to the town.

A short time later, the sergeant spotted the Jeep driving negligently on Bailey Street in Canton near the Stoughton town line and followed it at a distance, police said. The Jeep soon crashed into another car and then a utility pole.

The driver — who was later identified as Francilme — ran from the Jeep after the crash, police said. Canton police and a Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit helped Stoughton police search for Francilme, and Canton police arrested him on Greenwood Road about an hour later.

The driver whose car was hit by Francilme declined medical treatment, police said.
