Mass. man IDed as driver killed in NH going up to 120 mph
A Massachusetts man was killed early Sunday after he lost control of his car while speeding on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire, authorities said.
Before the crash, New Hampshire State Police said the driver had reached speeds of 120 mph as he traveled erratically down the highway.
State troopers had attempted to pull the vehicle over, but were unable to do so before the driver steered toward an exit, where he lost control, sending the car off the highway and into a tree, the state police said in a statement.
The agency identified the driver as Benjamin Tapia Gately, 20, of Saugus, Mass.
A pursuit began after Tapia Gately failed to stop for a state trooper when he was spotted speeding around 12:50 a.m. on I-93 northbound near Exit 12.
State police said his vehicle was at one point "speeding up to 120 miles per hour," but did not specify where on the highway he may have reached that speed, or what his speed was when the pursuit began.
As he approached Exit 18 about 12 miles down the road, Tapia Gately attempted to take the off-ramp but lost control of his car.
"The vehicle went off the road, crossed the northbound on-ramp, went down an embankment, and struck a tree," the state police said.
Tapia Gately was ejected from the vehicle. Emergency responders were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle, state police said.
First responders from the town of Canterbury, where the crash occurred, assisted state troopers at the crash scene.
