Mass. weather: Dangerous cold temps and flood watch grip state
Massachusetts residents are bracing for another night of frigid conditions with sub-zero temperatures and dangerous wind chills.
The National Weather Service has already issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Berkshire County lasting until 9 a.m. Saturday, and the rest of the state will be under the advisory from 7 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.
Low temperatures are expected to plunge below zero across the state overnight, reaching minus 2 degrees in Boston, minus 4 in Worcester, minus 8 in Springfield and minus 9 in Pittsfield. Cape Cod & the Islands will cling to a low temp of 6 degrees.
Sustained winds of 10 to 13 mph and gusts up to 31 mph will make being outdoors dangerous. Wind chill values are expected to range from minus 3 degrees on Cape Cod & the Islands to minus 23 degrees in Western Massachusetts.
The National Weather Service notes that frostbite can set in after 30 minutes in such conditions and urges anyone who must go outside to dress in layers, including face cover, hat and gloves.
Saturday will bring slightly warmer conditions, with much of the state in the high teens and low 20s, but temps will plunge near zero again overnight.
Another round of extreme weather could be on the way Sunday, as a "bomb cyclone" storm could bring significant snowfall and coastal flooding to the eastern part of the state. The National Weather Service predicts an 80% chance of snow for Cape Cod & the Islands, with 3 to 5 inches of snow possible. Boston has a 60% chance of snow, with 1 to 2 inches in the forecast.
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Watch from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon for Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, as well as parts of Essex County, Suffolk County, Norfolk County, Plymouth County and Barnstable County.
