The leaves turning to colors means winter is coming soon in Massachusetts.

AccuWeather released its winter forecast for the 2025-2026 season, and Massachusetts residents are in for a snowy one.

The forecasting website has predicted the Boston region will experience more snow than last year, though it may still be less snow than the historical average.

AccuWeather predicts a snowfall of 36-40 inches for the season, compared to last years 28.1 inches. The number falls short of the average snowfall of 49.2 inches experienced in the region from 1991 to 2020.

"Storms during mid- to late winter may produce a mix of rain and snow rather than just snow," the forecast reads.

The strongest storms of the season are expected to occur during the first weeks of the season, according to the forecast. Winter storms will track from Canada into the Midwest before pushing toward the mid-Atlantic and New England, some of them capable of becoming nor'easters.

Meteorological winter starts on Monday, Dec. 1, while astronomical winter begins on the solstice, which in 2025 occurs at 10:03 a.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 21.
