It's safe to say that McDonald's customers have not been happy with the recent prices. Earlier this month, fans criticized the cost of the latest limited-time McDonaldland Meal (it's reported to be priced between $14 and $20).
Now, with inflation and cost increases looming, it's been revealed that McDonald's and its U.S. franchisees will be pricing their eight beloved combo meals at 15% less than the total cost of purchasing the items separately. The news was initially reported by The Wall Street Journal earlier today, on August 20.
According to CNN Business , the fast food restaurant is presenting financial support to franchisees if they agree to these pricing terms. The lower prices will be put in place as soon as next month. McDonald's typical combo meals include a main entrée, side, and a beverage (for example, a Big Mac with fries and a soft drink).
The Daily Double Meal Deal, The McChicken Meal Deal, and the McDouble Meal Deal are all limited-time offerings right now, but it's unclear if those are the combo meals this pricing news is referring to. McDonald's is set to expand its combo offerings soon, debuting an initiative of Extra Value Meals (such as a $5 breakfast deal and an $8 McNugget and Big Mac special).

Currently, combo meal prices range from $5 to $18, with the average Big Mac meal costing around $10. The Wall Street Journal predicts that with the proposed pricing, a combo meal that's $10 could be reduced to $8.50.
"Reengaging the low-income consumer is critical, as they typically visit our restaurants more frequently than middle- and high-income consumers," said CEO Chris Kempczinski on an August 6 earnings call, per CNBC .
He later continued, "Certainly, overall [quick service restaurant] traffic in the U.S. remained challenging, as visits across the industry by low-income consumers once again declined by double digits versus the prior year period."
McDonald's has attempted to regain customers through extensive collaborations and partnerships. For instance, the chain recently announced a new Happy Meal offering that centers around world-wide famous K-pop band BTS, titled the TinyTAN Happy Meal. Hopefully, with prices overwhelming loyal customers—causing them to order food elsewhere, like Wendy's—this news will be a successful effort in trending costs downwards.
