Mount Holyoke College to be tuition-free for families making less than $150K
Mount Holyoke College is offering free tuition to any U.S. family with an income of up to $150,000, according to a Friday announcement.
"The Mount Holyoke Commitment expands the reach of a transformative liberal arts education," said Mount Holyoke College President Danielle R. Holley. "We welcome bold leaders, ambitious learners and all those who want to expand their knowledge, skills and worldview. The Mount Holyoke Commitment is making it possible for more students and families to call Mount Holyoke home."
The benchmark for free tuition means that approximately 75% of American families would qualify, according to Robin Randall, vice president of enrollment management at Mount Holyoke.
"With this initiative, Mount Holyoke offers a clear, transparent message to families concerned about college costs: this won't stand in the way of a boundless future at Mount Holyoke," Randall said.
The announcement comes after a similar pledge by Tufts University on Tuesday and Harvard saying it would cover tuition for families earning $200,000 or less.
A steady stream of other institutions has also announced tuition-free programs.
The tuition-free program, called the Mount Holyoke Commitment, builds upon the institution's pledge to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for undergraduate students.
It is funded in part by alumni and donors at Mount Holyoke.
"Mount Holyoke is pushing forward with what we know works: investing in bold future leaders and expanding opportunity at a time when federal support for higher education is being rolled back," President Holley continued. "Part of the founding vision for the College was that a Mount Holyoke education would be affordable for students from all income levels. The Mount Holyoke Commitment is emphasizing our mission for today's needs."
