Björk has encouraged Greenland to declare independence after Donald Trump's renewed his threats to take over the country.

The Icelandic musician wrote on her social media Monday urging residents of the neighboring territory to break free from the Kingdom of Denmark, like Iceland did in 1944.

"I wish all Greenlanders blessing in their fight for independence," Björk wrote . "Icelanders are extremely relieved that they managed to break from the Danish in 1944. We didn't lose our language (my children would be speaking Danish now), and I burst with sympathy for Greenlanders."

The Grammy-nominated artist then cited Denmark's history of "treating Greenlanders like they are second class humans."

She specifically referred to thousands of young girls forcibly receiving contraception without their consent or knowledge between 1966 and 1970 as well as the Danish government removing children from their parents due to failed "parenting competency" tests.

"Colonialism has repeatedly given me horror chills up my back and the chance that my fellow Greenlanders might go from one cruel coloniser to another is too brutal to even imagine," Björk wrote. "Dear Greenlanders, declare independence!!!! Sympathetic wishes from your neighbours."

The singer's statement comes after Trump said the U.S. "needs" Greenland for Arctic security," the Associated Press reported .

The island, 80% of which lies above the Arctic Circle, serves as a strategic location for global security and trade debates. Covered by NATO's collective defense , the U.S. operates the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland and supports defense operations.

Greenland is also rich in rare earth minerals that are crucial for technology and have attracted the U.S., especially to counter China's market dominance.

Meanwhile Denmark is beefing up its military presence with new naval vessels and drones as China and Russia are increasing their influence in the Arctic. This has therefore raised security concerns, especially for the U.S.
