NEWMARKET — The town of Newmarket has completed the purchase of property at 11 Creighton Street , a move officials say will significantly expand Richard Schanda Conservation Park and enhance recreational opportunities along the Lamprey River.

The closing took place Dec. 3 in the Town Council Chambers, with Town Manager Steve Fournier, Recreation Director Aimee Gigandet, Town Planner Bart McDonough, and representatives from Legacy Properties, Inc. and The Cheney Companies in attendance.

Located between Schanda Park and the Water Treatment Plant, the $685,000 acquisition of 11 Creighton Street was funded entirely through the town's Recreation Enterprise Fund.

"This acquisition reflects the Town Council's dedication to enhancing quality of life for all residents while planning responsibly for the future," Fournier said. "By leveraging the Recreation Enterprise Fund, we are able to invest in our community's recreational assets without placing an added burden on taxpayers."

Gigandet credited residents for their support of local recreation programs, noting that community participation sustains the fund and makes projects like the Schanda Park expansion possible.

"Our 'Support the Rec, Create Community' initiative thrives because of those who continuously take part and champion our efforts," Gigandet said.

"The expansion of Schanda Park is not only about adding land; it's about creating new possibilities for gathering, recreation, and connection with the Lamprey River," McDonough said.

The expanded parkland is expected to provide improved river access, new walking trails, enhanced boating activities, and community programs, while safeguarding vital riverfront property in line with the town's Master Plan.

Legacy Properties and Cheney Companies played a key role in the acquisition.

"It is our honor to help the town of Newmarket purchase the riverfront property that abuts Schanda Park and the River Walk," said Ann Adams and Lane Cheney in a joint statement. "Our family has been a part of the Newmarket community for many years, and we are so excited to help the town execute its waterfront vision."
