A good portion of New England is predicted to be able to see aurora borealis, otherwise known as the northern lights, on Monday night.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Center posted an image of an aurora forecast with a visibility line including 18 states — among them Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

An eruption of solar material and magnetic fields, known as a coronal mass ejection , will cause the northern lights to be visible, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.

This eruption took place on August 30 and is headed to Earth at potentially 2 million mph, the center wrote.

In addition to the presence of the northern lights, limited minor effects to some technological infrastructure is possible, but usually can be mitigated, the center wrote.

The Space Weather Prediction Center notes that the best times to view the northern lights are within an hour or two of midnight. Getting away from city lights and other sources of light will enhance the viewing experience, as well.

The northern lights are also forecast to be visible in the United States on Tuesday, but the viewing line excludes New England — mainly centering on Alaska and northern parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
