Ocean State Job lot to close Springfield Plaza store

SPRINGFIELD — Ocean State Job Lot will close its store at 1317 Liberty St. in the Springfield Plaza in March at the conclusion of its lease, the chain announced this week.

“Our goal is to place as many associates as possible in equivalent positions at a nearby Ocean State Job Lot store,” the company said in a written statement.

The nearby stores are at 1686 Boston Road in Springfield, 1451 Memorial Drive in Chicopee, and 2291 Northampton St. in Holyoke.

Ocean State Job Lot has been in the Springfield market for nearly 45 years.

Springfield Plaza was built in the late 1950s on the site of the Springfield Airport where the Granville Brothers built and tested their Gee Bee aircraft. It was the city’s first shopping center. It once boasted a J.M. Fields department store and had a Jerry Lewis Cinema .
