OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Targeted in Drive-By Shooting After Molotov Attack
- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was targeted in an apparent drive-by shooting outside his San Francisco home, leading to the arrest of two suspects on charges related to negligent discharge of a firearm.
Just two days after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at Sam Altman’s San Francisco home, police say the OpenAI CEO was targeted again—this time in an apparent drive-by shooting outside the same property.
According to a San Francisco Police Department report obtained by the San Francisco Standard , officers arrested Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, on April 12 after a shot was allegedly fired from a Honda sedan outside Altman’s Russian Hill residence.
Investigators say the car passed the home, then returned around 1:40 a.m. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a passenger extending a hand out of the window and firing a round toward the Lombard Street side of the property before the vehicle sped away.
Security guards at the home heard the gunshot, and cameras captured the car’s license plate, allowing police to track down the suspects shortly afterward. Both were booked on charges related to negligent discharge of a firearm.
Police later recovered the Honda and detained the pair at a nearby residence on Taylor Street. During a search of the home, officers reportedly found three firearms. No injuries were reported, and neither OpenAI nor San Francisco police publicly commented on the second incident.
The latest confrontation comes as Altman, one of the most prominent figures in Silicon Valley, faces extraordinary public attention. As CEO of OpenAI, Altman has become one of the most recognizable names in tech since ChatGPT launched in 2022.
In the aftermath of an earlier attack, Altman publicly acknowledged the growing hostility surrounding artificial intelligence. “The fear and anxiety about AI is justified,” he wrote. “We are in the process of witnessing the largest change to society in a long time, and perhaps ever.”
Altman made those comments after a 20-year-old Texas man, identified by authorities as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, was arrested in connection with an alleged Molotov cocktail attack on the same home . Police say Moreno-Gama approached the property and threw a flaming bottle at the front gate.
Security personnel extinguished the fire before it spread. About an hour later, the same suspect allegedly appeared at OpenAI’s headquarters in Mission Bay and threatened to burn down the building. He was later booked on suspicion of attempted murder, arson, and possession of an incendiary device.
The two attacks come as Altman is also dealing with a separate legal battle involving his sister, Annie Altman.
Earlier this month, she filed an amended lawsuit accusing him of sexually abusing her during their childhood in Missouri. Sam Altman has denied the allegations and is countersuing for defamation.
