A go-to bookstore on the North Shore specializing in African American literature will close later this month after more than four decades.

Pyramid Books in Salem will close on Jan. 31 "after nearly 45 remarkable years in business," the business wrote in a Facebook post on Jan. 2.

"We extend our sincerest gratitude to our valued customers, both near and far, for their loyalty and business," the post read. "We look forward to seeing you this month and don't forget to stop by and get your readings with Doug and Vikki!"

Pyramid Books is hosting a store-wide sale with 40% off all items up until its last day. All sales are final.

Despite the physical store closing up shop, Pyramid Books said it "will be looking into online selling in the future," adding "Spiritual Essence Incense will be included along with other new and exciting products!"

The news of Pyramid Books' closure saddened loyal patrons, many who always visited the store while in town.

"This makes me incredibly sad!! I love your shop and I stop by whenever I visit," one Facebook user commented. "I will look out for your online shop and I will do my best to come by before you close officially. You will be missed!!"

Another user said Pyramid Books was "my first and favorite shop every time I visit Salem" and promised to "gladly shop from an online store if that is my only option."

"This makes me so sad. It's like an end of an era," another comment reads. "There's very few shops that make it worth a trip downtown."

Established in the 1980s, Pyramid Books has been more than just a highly sought-after literary destination . The African-American owned business is described as a "one stop shop for all your spiritual needs," according to Destination Salem .

In addition to specializing in literature by and about the African Diaspora, Pyramid Books sells crystals, candles, jewelry, locally dipped incense and self-help metaphysical books. Visitors can also get a tarot reading from one of the shop's "friendly, talented, and caring psychic readers."
