The Egan Maritime Institute is currently investigating what could be a piece of history on Low Beach in the 'Sconset area of Nantucket: a hunk of wood and metal that is presumed to be part of a shipwreck.

The length of weathered wood with metal fasteners was found Tuesday and subsequently documented by Egan team members.

"At Egan, our mission is to preserve and share Nantucket's remarkable maritime history," Carlisle Jensen, executive director of the Nantucket institute, said. "This discovery offers an exciting opportunity to deepen our understanding of the island's past while reinforcing our commitment to bringing history to life through storytelling and education."

The origin and age of the plank are unclear, but Egan is working to get answers, Jensen said.

Egan Maritime has contacted the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources, including director and chief archaeologist for the organization, Dave Robinson, to report the find and ensure that all appropriate steps are taken to protect and further study the site, according to a press release.

Further investigation will be guided by BUAR's direction and conducted in partnership with appropriate state and academic experts.
