Public schools are a common good that benefit everyone | Letter
I recently attended a music competition at a public school. As I watched brave, beautiful children work together to create amazing music, my eyes welled with tears.
I was witness to the beautiful chaos of parents, students, teachers, bus drivers and volunteers. The excitement palpable, the comradery was delightful. Stuff like this is food for the soul, yet there I sat, filled with an immense sorrow.
Wisconsin public schools educate over 800,000 children . Why are people so quick to go down rabbit hole distractions of "litter boxes" and "bathrooms", demonizing a whole system that is actually working well (and is set up to allow us local control) because of unfounded rumors?
Public schools are a common good that benefit everyone, but they are dependent on the fickle whims of politicians who stand with our children for photo ops, then abandon them when voting; and then have the gall to leave our public schools bearing the blame. Vote. Them. Out.
A free, common, public education is the foundation of our democracy and we are at risk of losing both. We must all join the fight and stand up for our public schools and the dedicated folks who work in them!
