Putnam gym renamed after State Representative Bud L. Williams
SPRINGFIELD — The Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy Gymnasium will be renamed in honor of state Rep. Bud L. Williams, D-Springfield.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Superintendent Sonia Dinnall, and members of the Springfield School Committee will gather Friday at 6 for the event.
A lifelong resident of Springfield, Williams is a proud graduate of Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School — formerly Trade — where he excelled academically and athletically, demonstrating leadership and sportsmanship on and off the Putnam basketball court.
Williams was the first 1,000-point scorer in Putnam history; named to the All-City Basketball Team twice; and named to the All-Western Mass Basketball Team.
"Basketball was his passion, an escape from the hardships of growing up poor and an outlet where he could shine. He stayed true to his belief to lead by example, always fight for the underdog, and lean on community to provide support when needed," a news release said.
Williams won election to the House in 2017, and he served as Springfield city councilor from 1993 to 2008 and again from 2011 to 2017.
