The United States Secret Service says agents shot an armed man near the White House on Monday after he allegedly opened fire toward officers during a chaotic confrontation that unfolded close to Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade.

The dramatic incident triggered a rapid security response around the White House complex, temporarily forcing members of the press off the North Lawn while heavily armed officers flooded the area.

Secret Service Says Suspect Fired Toward Agents

According to Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn, the confrontation began around 3:30 p.m. ET when plainclothes officers spotted what he described as a “suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm.”

Quinn said the officers alerted uniformed Secret Service personnel, who attempted to approach the man near 15th Street and Independence Avenue. The suspect allegedly fled and then brandished a firearm before firing toward Secret Service agents, who returned fire.

“The man is alleged to have run away and brandished a firearm,” Quinn said during a press briefing. He added that the suspect fired “in the direction of Secret Service agents who returned fire.”

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released publicly, was taken to a hospital. Authorities said his condition remains unknown.

JD Vance Motorcade Passed Nearby Moments Before Shooting

The incident took on even greater significance after officials confirmed that Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade had passed nearby shortly before the gunfire erupted.

Quinn clarified that investigators do not currently believe the suspect specifically targeted Vance or the motorcade itself.

“He did not attack the motorcade and there was no indication that approaching it was his intent,” Quinn said.

Still, witnesses told NBC News they saw a man running toward the direction of the motorcade moments before shots rang out.

NBC reporters also witnessed National Guard members and police officers suddenly sprinting toward the area immediately after several loud pops were heard near the White House grounds.

Minor Bystander Injured During Incident

Authorities confirmed that a bystander, described as a minor, was struck by gunfire during the confrontation and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Quinn said investigators believe the child was likely struck by gunfire from the suspect, though officials are still determining the exact circumstances.

“But everything I’ve seen leads me to believe, and the investigators believe, he was struck by the suspect,” Quinn said.

No Secret Service agents were injured during the incident.

White House Lawn Briefly Evacuated

As the situation unfolded, Secret Service officers armed with long guns rushed onto the White House North Lawn and ordered members of the media to evacuate into the briefing room.

The lockdown lasted less than 10 minutes before reporters were allowed back outside.

At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was reportedly hosting a small-business summit inside the White House East Room. Officials said the event itself was not interrupted.

Video Shows Naked, Handcuffed Suspect on Stretcher

One of the strangest details to emerge came from video obtained by NBC News showing a naked, handcuffed man being loaded onto a stretcher following the shooting.

A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation reportedly confirmed the man in the footage was the suspect.

According to reports, the suspect appeared conscious and alert while being transported. Witnesses described him as white, middle-aged, with graying hair and what appeared to be a facial injury on the left side of his face.

Investigation Comes Days After Attempted Trump Assassination Case

The shooting happened just one week after Cole Allen was charged with allegedly attempting to assassinate President Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25.

That case already had security agencies on heightened alert, and Monday’s incident immediately fueled fresh fears about escalating political violence.

Asked whether the latest shooting may have been connected to threats against Trump or his administration, Quinn said investigators are still working to determine a motive.

“Whether or not it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know, but we will find out,” he said.

Online Reactions Quickly Turn Political

The incident immediately triggered emotional reactions online, especially among conservative users who argued Republican officials and Trump supporters are increasingly becoming targets.

“I would really really really REALLY appreciate it if Leftists stopped trying to murder Republicans,” one commenter wrote.

Another reaction said:

“This has to stop. These people hate so much that they want all MAGA dead.”

Others described growing fear around political events and security gatherings.

“We needed multiple law enforcement agencies, and dozens of cops strapped with M4s and surveillance drones just to attend a simple endorsing convention,” one person claimed.

Another commenter wrote:

“We need to pray for all in the administration that are supporting the President and America. They are all targets of the deranged and indoctrinated.”

Investigators Still Trying to Determine Motive

At this stage, authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or confirmed any political motive behind the shooting.

The investigation is now being handled by Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department, while federal authorities continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts.

But with the incident unfolding near the White House, close to the vice president’s motorcade, and just days after another alleged assassination attempt tied to Trump, the event has already intensified concerns about political violence and security in Washington.

Do you think political tensions in America are reaching a dangerous breaking point, or are people rushing to conclusions before investigators know the full story?
