Smoke lingers in Mass. as rain, storms could return. Temps in the 90s could be back too
Hazy skies caused by Canadian wildfire smoke is expected to linger for another day, but clouds could soon gather and produce a new round of thunderstorms across Massachusetts later this week.
Smoke should be more concentrated in the skies above southern New England Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service. While much of the region should be dry, a "few convective showers could still develop across [northwestern Massachusetts]," forecasters wrote.
Nighttime lows should dip down into the mid-50s or low 60s, forecasters continued. By Wednesday, temperatures are anticipated to climb back into the mid-70s and close to 80 degrees.
An Air Quality Alert should conclude at 12 a.m. on Wednesday. This was in effect due to fine particulates in the air as a result of the smoke moving south from large wildfires burning in Canada.
"Air is unhealthy for sensitive children and adults, such as those with asthma, lung or heart disease, and older adults," the alert read. "Sensitive children and adults should limit prolonged outdoor activity."
While haze should be expected to cling to the sky, smoke concentrations should be lower than they were the previous two days, forecasters said. But because smoke could leave skies appearing filtered, this could contribute to cooler conditions.
Humidity levels could start to increase on Wednesday, with parts of Western Massachusetts potentially seeing some showers late Wednesday, forecasters said. But fog could be more prominent that night.
Temperatures on Thursday should be slightly warmer, between 75 and 81 degrees, forecasters said.
A high-pressure system should become centered over the Gulf of Maine, which could bring mostly dry weather for most of the end of the week, forecasters said. But, it could deliver some instability "and a chance for showers and garden variety thunderstorms" on Thursday, forecasters wrote.
As this pressure exits by Friday, temperatures could climb up into the low 80s, then further up into the mid-80s on Saturday, forecasters said. Sunday could see temperatures back up in the 90s, with humidity levels climbing further as well.
"This also contributes to renewed afternoon showers and thunderstorm chances next week," forecasters wrote.
