Springfield battles 3-alarm South End fire (photos)
SPRINGFIELD — Firefighters from Springfield, Agawam, Chicopee and Ludlow batted a three-alarm blaze Friday morning that threatened to collapse an unoccupied home at 22 Acushnet Ave. in the city's South End.
No one was injured.
As of 11:30 a.m., the fire was still burning. But firefighters were beginning to leave the scene an hour later. Investigators have begun looking for the cause.
The home dates to 1901, according to city records.
The fire sent clouds of smoke billowing through the neighborhood. Firefighters worked in the bitter cold.
The two-family, three-and-a-half-story home was unoccupied and undergoing renovations, Springfield Fire Capt. Drew Piemonte said.
The windows were boarded up, and there was a construction waste bin on site.
