Springfield crash into building displaces 6

SPRINGFIELD — A driver smashed into an apartment building on Worthington Street, heavily damaging the building and forcing six people out of their homes Friday night.

The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, after firefighters extricated her from the car, said Fire Capt. Drew Piemonte.

The crash took place around 10 p.m. when the driver lost control of her vehicle and crashed into 841-851 Worthington St., pushing a foundation wall into the basement, Piemonte said.

No residents were injured, but six people were displaced from their homes after the Building Department condemned the structure. The residents were assisted by the American Red Cross of Western Massachusetts, he said.

The Police Department is investigating the crash, Piemonte said.
