St. Johns County has reopened the Fort Matanzas vehicular beach access ramp after completing an improvement project that include making it more accessible to people with disabilities.

The ramp initially closed for resiliency upgrades in November. Later, in coordination with the property owner, the National Park Service, crews added ADA accessibility upgrades to the parking lot and entrance area.

Funding for the project was provided by the park service without the need for county money, a news release from the county said.

County officials said that because of sea turtle nesting season, beach access gates close nightly at 7:30 p.m. and reopen each morning at 8 a.m. through October 31.

Officials reminded visitors not to approach or touch wildlife.
