Sunday shows preview: Iran war deal prospects uncertain after Trump calls off talks
President Trump called off a second round of peace talks with Iran on Saturday, the day U.S. officials were set to travel to Islamabad for negotiations.
Iranian officials met with Pakistani mediators on Saturday morning for “a very fruitful visit,” according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The foreign minister said his government has “yet to see if the U.S. is truly serious about diplomacy.”
The two sides are currently engaged in a ceasefire, and the future of these negotiations now hangs in balance. Iran and the U.S. are opposed on several key issues, including control of the Strait of Hormuz and an Iranian nuclear deal.
The U.S. is attempting to limit Tehran’s nuclear capabilities under a new agreement, after President Trump exited the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during his first administration.
Former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who helped broker the JCPOA with Iran under the Obama administration, will join ABC News’s “This Week” on Sunday to discuss the current state of the negotiations.
Additionally, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) will join CBS News’s “Face the Nation” to share his perspective on the ongoing conflict from his role on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
After a Democratic victory in Virginia this week, the redistricting battle now heads to Florida, where the Republican governor has called a special legislative session to consider new GOP-drawn congressional maps.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) warned Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) that the GOP-drawn maps would backfire and actually net Democratic candidates an advantage.
“Our message to Florida Republicans is, ‘F around and find out,’” Jeffries told reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, referring to the GOP redistricting effort.
DeSantis hit back at the Democratic leader , challenging him to campaign in the state.
“There’s nothing that could be better for Republicans in Florida than to see Jeffries … everywhere around this state,” the governor said during a Wednesday press conference. “Voters will not like what they see, they will not want that type of ideology, and so the door is open, the invitation’s out there.”
Jeffries will join Fox News’s “Fox News Sunday” this weekend.
In other congressional news, the Senate Banking Committee is expected to vote next week on the nomination of Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as chair of the Federal Reserve.
Warsh was grilled by the committee on Tuesday about his commitment to maintaining the central bank’s independence from the executive branch, as Trump ramps up pressure for the Fed to lower interest rates.
Sen. Tom Tillis (R-N.C.), who sits on the committee, had vowed to hold up Warsh’s nomination until the Trump administration closed its criminal investigation into Powell.
The Justice Department dropped the charges against the current Fed chair on Friday, clearing the pathway for Warsh’s confirmation.
Tillis will join NBC News’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Additionally, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will appear on “Fox News Sunday.”
Also on the horizon is an upcoming visit from British King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the U.S. The royal couple will meet with President Trump for a formal state dinner at the White House, and the king will deliver a joint speech to Congress.
The king is also expected to meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the 9/11 Memorial during the trip.
British Ambassador Christian Turner will talk with CBS News’s Margaret Brennan about this highly-anticipated royal visit on Sunday’s edition of “Face the Nation.”
