Suspect arrested after assaulting 77-year-old man during carjacking in Mass., police say
A homeless man is facing charges after assaulting a 77-year-old man during an armed carjacking in Newburyport Friday afternoon, according to police.
David Agneta, 46, has been charged with two counts of carjacking and one count of assault and battery on an elderly or disabled person, Newburyport police said in a press release .
On July 25, officers responded to a home on High Street shortly before 3:15 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting that an unknown suspect had shoved a man to the ground in the driveway of a home and stolen the man’s car, police said. The car was last seen driving east on High Street.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim had just arrived home and gotten out of his car when the suspect came over to him and demanded his keys, police said. The suspect took the victim’s keys “during a violent altercation” and then stole his car.
The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics, police said. Officers took a description of the suspect and were able to identify him as Agneta through nearby security video.
Newburyport police obtained a warrant for Agneta’s arrest out of Newburyport District Court, police said. Rhode Island State Police arrested him late Friday night in Exeter on a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Agneta is expected to be arraigned in court Monday morning in Rhode Island, police said. He will be brought back to Massachusetts to answer to the carjacking and assault charges at a later date.
