A 16-year-old boy is facing a criminal charge after prosecutors say he attacked a fellow teenager in a Dorchester park earlier this year, leaving them with severe facial injuries.

The teen, whose name was not released because of his age, was arraigned in Dorchester Juvenile Court last week on the single charge of assault and battery causing serious injury, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden's office said in a statement.

A judge ordered the teen released on personal recognizance and ordered him to stay away from and have no contact with the victim, another 16-year-old boy. The teen will return to court on Aug. 27 for a pre-trial hearing. He is represented by a private lawyer.

The victim's mother reported the assault on May 11 around 1 p.m. She told police her son had been assaulted the prior evening, around 8:30 p.m., at Pope John Paul II Park on Hallet Street in Dorchester, according to Hayden's office.

The woman said her son had gone to the park to hang out and drink with his friends.

At some point, the teen became upset when his ex-girlfriend showed interest in the victim, prosecutors said. He asked the victim to take a walk.

When the pair were alone, the teen punched the victim in the face, prosecutors said. The victim lost his balance, hit his head, and became unconscious, hearing ringing in his ears. When he woke up, prosecutors say the teen was on top of him punching his face and chest.

Others at the gathering saw a large amount of blood on the ground, and one called the victim's mother, who took her son to Boston Children's Hospital.

The victim sustained multiple injuries to his face, including several fractures and permanent damage to his teeth. His injuries required several surgeries, including reconstruction of his jaw.

The teen later texted the victim to apologize. The victim's mother said the pair were best friends before the fight.

"The injuries here are lasting and traumatic and I wish this young man a full recovery, both physically and emotionally," Hayden said in the statement. "It's tragic that the defendant chose to turn what was apparently a friendship into a violent encounter, ending with one person suffering severe injuries and another facing criminal charges."
