Teens accused of hitting 2 Springfield police cruisers with stolen car
Two teenagers are being accused by police of hitting two Springfield police cruisers and another parked car with a stolen car.
At about 9:40 a.m. on Monday, Springfield Police detectives saw a stolen Hyundai in the area of Dickinson Street and Beaumont Street. It had been reported stolen out of Enfield, Connecticut.
Officers saw two people sleeping inside the car and attempted to wake them up. The driver, later identified by police as 19-year-old Awad Anter, of Springfield, refused to open the door and placed the car into reverse hitting a cruiser as several officers were attempting to open the vehicle’s doors, police said. Anter then drove forward, hitting another cruiser before reversing, nearly hitting several officers, police said.
The 19-year-old then drove across Beaumont Street and hit an unoccupied parked car in a driveway before speeding away, police said.
The car was found unoccupied on the 100 block of Garfield Street as police saw the two teenagers from the car jumping a fence.
Anter and his passenger, a 17-year-old boy, were taken into custody on Forest Street around 10:20 a.m.
Anter is charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and six counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon.
Information regarding the 17-year-old was not released due to his age.
