‘Things happen’: Trump defends Saudi prince over murder of journalist
President Donald Trump on Tuesday lashed out at a reporter who asked about the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi while Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited the White House.
Trump said bin Salman "knew nothing about" the October 2018 brutal murder of the Washington Post columnist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, according to The Guardian
U.S. intelligence analysts concluded that bin Salman orchestrated Khashoggi's murder. He has denied any involvement.
Trump blasted the ABC News reporter who asked the question as "fake news," the online outlet reported.
"You're mentioning somebody that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman [Khashoggi] that you're talking about, Trump said, according to The Guardian.
"Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he [bin Salman] knew nothing about it. And we can leave it at that. You don't have to embarrass our guest by asking something like that," Trump said.
Bin Salman has said Saudi Arabia "did all the right steps" to investigate Khashoggi's death, according to The New York Times .
"It's painful and it's a huge mistake," he said, according to the Times.
