HOLYOKE — Police are warning drivers about a spike in thefts and attempted thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars, fueled by a viral social media challenge.

Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan said in a statement this week that the ploy targets models made between 2010 and 2021 that lack ignition immobilizers, making them easier to steal.

Videos on TikTok and other platforms show how to break into the cars by damaging the steering column and starting the engine without a key. Therefore, these vehicle ignitions can be compromised, he said.

Kia and Hyundai are offering free anti-theft software upgrades for select models. Hyundai owners can schedule an appointment at Gary Rome Hyundai in Holyoke or visit garyromehyundai.com. Kia owners can find more information at Kia vehicles.

Keenan also shared tips to help prevent thefts. He recommends using a steering wheel lock, locking all windows and doors, installing a battery disconnect switch and parking in well-lit or secure areas like garages.

A kill switch, which requires professional installation, and an aftermarket car alarm can also help.

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call the Holyoke Police Department at 413-322-6900.
