Trump extends ‘rigged’ election claims to Virginia redistricting, without citing evidence

President Trump responded Wednesday to Virginia Democrats’ redistricting win Tuesday night, saying the results were “rigged” without citing evidence.

“A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“All day long Republicans were winning, the Spirit was unbelievable, until the very end when, of course, there was a massive ‘Mail In Ballot Drop!’ Where have I heard that before — And the Democrats eked out another Crooked Victory! Six to five goes to ten to one, and yet the Presidential Election in November was very close to a 50-50 split,” he continued.

Since he lost in 2020, Trump has falsely claimed that election was “rigged,” continuing to mention it throughout much of his second term. Recently, he also said, without proof, that polls showing low public approval of his presidency and the war in Iran are fixed.

Virginia voters approved the Democrat-backed redistricting plan, which could expand the party’s 6-5 advantage in the commonwealth’s congressional delegation to 10-1.

The development stands to be a major blow to Republicans ahead of the midterms, but the results will likely be appealed in court given concerns over the language used on the ballot and arguments that redistricting violates the Virginia Constitution.

The president went on to accuse the referendum’s wording of being “purposefully unintelligible and deceptive.”

“As everyone knows, I am an extraordinarily brilliant person, and even I had no idea what the hell they were talking about in the Referendum, and neither do they! Let’s see if the Courts will fix this travesty of ‘Justice,’” Trump said.

Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sought to galvanize Virginia voters in a telerally on Monday.

Trump’s political director, James Blair, reacted to news of the Democratic victory in an interview on CNN on Wednesday, touting Republicans’ overperformance in the election.

“This is a state in November of 2025 that went by 15 points to the Democrats for governor and about 8 points for attorney general. Last night, this was a 3-point race. That’s actually a 3-point overperformance of the Trump 2024 historic performance in Virginia,” Blair said. “So just as a baseline for all of the Democrats crowing this morning, if Republicans perform anywhere near on average the way they did in Virginia last night, we not only add seats to the Senate, but we add seats to the House.”
