Two passengers are dead after a crash on US 59 that investigators say was caused by a pickup truck going too fast in heavy rain, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

DPS said the crash happened around 4:53 p.m. on Friday near County Road 330. Troopers said a 2020 Dodge Ram was heading north when the driver lost control on the wet road, crossed into the opposite lanes, and hit a small bus operated by R.E.A.L Inc.

A passenger in the pickup truck, Margaret Ward, 58, of Conroe, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, Sherry Edwards, 71, of Mathis, was on the bus and later died at a Beeville hospital.

The 61-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital. The bus driver, a 58-year-old woman from Alice, along with a 24-year-old man from Taft and his daughter, were also hospitalized.

A third vehicle, a 2024 Nissan Altima, went off the road to avoid hitting the bus. The driver, a 35-year-old woman from San Antonio, was not hurt.

R.E.A.L Transportation said its team responded right away and is working to support those involved.

“The safety of our riders, employees, and community remains our top priority,” the company said.

The crash is still under investigation.
