"Post Office locations will be closed in recognition of the federal holiday," the USPS announced .

"Only Priority Mail Express items will be delivered on the holiday, and regular mail delivery and retail services will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 14."

Whether you need to mail out a check to pay your bills or you're expecting important correspondence, it helps to know when USPS is in operation so you can plan around holiday closures.

Though post offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 13, USPS customers will still have access to many postal products and services.

The USPS has a network of more than 2,600 self-service kiosks, available in select Post Office lobbies nationwide, that include these features:

  • Postage printing for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and international shipping

  • Stamps for purchase

  • Ability to weigh and mail packages

  • Package tracking information

When a holiday falls on a weekend, the USPS observes it on a weekday.

"If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as the holiday. When the holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday becomes the holiday," according to the National Association of Letter Carriers .

"When a holiday falls on a weekday, the actual day of the holiday is what is observed."
