Muriel Bowser has built a long career in public service, with more than 20 years in leadership roles serving the nation's capital. A fifth-generation Washingtonian, she made history as only the second mayor to win three terms in office and the first Black woman to be elected to three four-year terms leading a major U.S. city.

Her work has earned national recognition, including the inaugural Marion Barry Jr. Award for Public Service from the African American Mayors Association in 2023 and the Exceptional Moral Courage Award from the Truman Center for National Policy in 2021.

Before becoming mayor, Bowser served as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and later as a member of the D.C. Council. During her tenure as mayor, she has focused on initiatives to boost economic growth, expand affordable housing, and lead the city through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also been a consistent advocate for higher education, supporting efforts to increase access and create stronger opportunities for student success.
