Preservation Worcester is set to launch a series of lantern-lit tours through one of the city's historic burial grounds, offering visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the stories of those who shaped local history.

Beginning Friday, October 17, the organization will host evening tours at Rural Cemetery on Grove Street in Worcester , where actors will portray the lives and legacies of various notable individuals buried within its grounds.

The tours aim to shed light on the rich history contained within the cemetery, bringing to life the stories that might otherwise remain forgotten beneath the headstones. Visitors will be guided through the historic grounds by lantern light, creating an immersive experience that connects present-day Worcester with its past.

Rural Cemetery, established in the 19th century, serves as the final resting place for many significant Worcester residents. The cemetery's park-like setting, with its winding paths and mature trees, provides an atmospheric backdrop for these historical explorations. While peaceful during daylight hours, the cemetery takes on a different character after dark, when the tours will take place.

Among the stories to be shared are accounts of prominent historical figures who contributed to Worcester's development and growth over the centuries. In a more macabre turn, attendees will also hear about "the local pharmacist who killed his family," representing one of the darker chapters in local history.

By connecting residents with stories from Worcester's complex past, the organization helps foster appreciation for local history and the figures who shaped the community.
