Here are the winners of Chicopee City Council, School Committee races
CHICOPEE — Fourteen percent of Chicopee voters took to the polls Tuesday to elect new and incumbent City Council and School Committee members to office, according to results from the city clerk's office.
"These were all close races and hard-fought battles," said Keith Rattell, city clerk, of the election results. Rattell predicted the exact percentage of voters that would turnout to the polls earlier this week.
There were no major upsets, the results show.
The councilors at large include incumbents Frank LaFlamme and Jerry Roy — who received 3,567 votes (18.58%) and 3,312 votes (17.25%), respectively. Jessica L. Avery and Joel McAuliffe, newcomers to the at-large seats, received 2,571 votes (13.39%) and 2,563 votes (13.35%), respectively.
Avery and McAuliffe take the seats of longtime Councilor Robert Zygarowski, who died earlier this year, and Councilor Timothy Wagner, who moved away from the city.
Incumbent Shane Brooks will keep his Ward 2 council seat. He received 449 votes, or 68% of the ward's ballots Tuesday. His opponent, Joseph Breton , received 202, or 30.84%, of the votes.
In Ward 3, Susan Goff will serve another term as councilor, beating opponent Darrin Breault with 347 votes to his 150. She received close to 70% of the votes in her ward.
Ward 5 will see a new councilor, Joseph F. Pasternak III, after incumbent Councilor Fred T. Krampits, a former candidate for this year's city collector race, did not move forward in the September primaries. Pasternak received 379 of the votes in his ward, or 53.53%, while his opponent Julie Ann L'Heureux got 328, or 46.33%.
Douglas P. Girouard, former School Committee member, is now a seated City Councilor, representing Ward 8. His ward's race was uncontested, and he is new to the position.
All other wards will keep their incumbent councilors: Abigail Arriaga for Ward 1, George Balakier for Ward 4, Samuel Shumsky for Ward 6, William Courchesne for Ward 7, and Mary-Beth Pniak Costello for Ward 9.
Mayor John Vieau, who was running unopposed, will maintain his position for another two years. He received 4,820 votes, or 95.39%. There were 233 write-in votes.
The city's longtime assessors, Laura McCarthy and Brian W. Suchy, will maintain their positions.
For the School Committee races, newcomer and longtime Chicopee Public Schools educator and administrator Robert "Bob" Cantin has toppled Mark McCarthy for the at-large position. It was a tight race, but Cantin came out on top with 2,727 votes, or 50.17%, to McCarthy's 2,689, or 49.47%.
Wards 4, 7 and 8 have elected new people to the committee. Diane Trela of Ward 4 will take over for Sandra Ann Peret, who has been elected to the Collector's Office. Trela received 98.83% of the votes in her ward.
Rafael "Ray" Nazario Jr. has won the majority of votes in Ward 7, or 98.59%, replacing Donald Lamothe , who announced he would not be running for reelection because of a family conflict of interest earlier this year.
And, Susan Constance Theresa Lemieux has won the School Committee seat in Ward 8, after Girouard announced his run for the Ward 8 city councilor position. Lemieux received 98.89% of the votes in her ward.
All other incumbents will remain seated: Deanna Rousseau for Ward 1; David Barsalou for Ward 2; Jason Dout for Ward 3 — Dout received 100% of the votes in his ward; Grace Schofield for Ward 5; Carlton Rene Brooks Jr. for Ward 6; and Ronald Bernard for Ward 9.
Dout was the only candidate to not have any write-in opposition across the City Council and School Committee positions.
"The results are official," said Rattell on Tuesday night. "The city has spoken."
