Woman fatally struck by car while walking on Mass. highway
A woman was struck and killed by a car while walking on Route 28 in Wareham Sunday night, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office announced Monday.
Wareham police received a call reporting the crash near 2796 Cranberry Hwy. around 8:40 p.m., the district attorney's office said in a press release . The call was from a passenger in a Volvo that was involved in the crash. They stated that the car had hit two pedestrians who were in the roadway.
Two injured people were found at the crash scene and taken to a local hospital, the district attorney's office said. One of the pedestrians — a 57-year-old woman — died of her injuries at the hospital.
Wareham and State Police officers who responded to the crash interviewed the driver and passenger of the Volvo, the district attorney's office said. Both said they were traveling south on Route 28 when they got to a bend in the road and saw the two pedestrians in the road. The Volvo could not avoid hitting the pedestrians because a car was in the opposite lane at the time of the crash, they said.
The Volvo driver told police they immediately pulled over after the crash, the district attorney's office said. The driver also said they had been driving within the speed limit and had not been distracted when coming around the bend.
Troopers also interviewed the surviving pedestrian, who said that he and the 57-year-old woman had been walking in the roadway because the sidewalk and roadside were covered in snow, the district attorney's office said. The woman had been walking with a walker close to the sidewalk, and he had been walking next to her further into the roadway.
The pedestrian told police that, before the Volvo reached them, the passenger side mirror of a black truck had hit him and knocked him down, the district attorney's office said. The woman with the walker then moved further into the roadway to get to him and was struck by the Volvo.
Massachusetts State Police troopers are investigating the crash, the district attorney's office said. Investigators are still in the process of notifying the woman's next of kin of her death and have not publicly identified her.
No further information about the crash has been released.
