Woman killed while walking on Mass. highway after her car became disabled
A car struck two women who were walking on a New Bedford highway Friday night after their car became disabled, killing one and leaving the other in critical condition, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office announced Sunday.
New Bedford resident Ruby Quiro Santos, 23, was killed in the crash on the ramp to Route 18 north near Hillman Street in New Bedford around 9:15 p.m., the district attorney's office said.
The initial investigation into the crash suggested that there was snow partially blocking the left lane of the ramp when Santos' Toyota Camry became disabled there, the district attorney's office said. An Audi A4 carrying multiple people drove to the scene to pick up Santos and another woman who was a passenger in her car.
Santos and her passenger were walking to the Audi when a Honda Accord hit them, the district attorney's office said. The Accord also struck the Audi and one of two Ford Explorers belonging to New Bedford police officers who'd responded to the initial crash. The marked police vehicles had their emergency lights flashing when the Honda crashed.
Massachusetts State Police responded to the second crash, and every person involved was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the district attorney's office said. Santos was declared dead the following day, and the other woman from her car was in critical but stable condition as of Sunday afternoon. Everyone else involved in the crash is expected to recover from their injuries.
The district attorney's office and State Police are investigating the fatal crash. No further information has been released.
