A Worcester man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for a killing in July 2020 over what officials described as an argument about payment of a restaurant bill.

Leroy Thompson, 30, was found guilty in Worcester County Superior Court of second-degree murder and reckless endangerment of a child on Aug. 8 in connection with the incident, which officials said happened in a car with a child seated inside.

Thompson will be eligible for parole after 20 years.

The shooting took place on July 5, 2020, and killed Joshua Lopez, 24, also a Worcester resident.

He died the following day after being shot while sitting in the backseat of a car in the area of Almont Avenue.

"I hope today's sentencing brings some measure of justice to the family and loved ones of Mr. Lopez," Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said in a statement on Wednesday.

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier described the killing as "unnecessary, heinous, and cruel" in a statement.

"The details of this case stand alone, and we anticipate they will weigh heavily when the opportunity for parole is examined," Saucier said.
