An investigation into the incident revealed Jason Mathers, 41, of Camarillo, had returned to the construction site looking for a former supervisor after being fired several weeks earlier, police said. Mathers attacked him with a knife, authorities said.

Police located Mathers in Oxnard around 9:30 p.m. and arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. He was taken to county jail on suspicion of attempted murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

In June 2019, Mathers' two felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and a special allegation of great bodily injury during a felony were dismissed, court records show.

He ultimately pleaded guilty in June 2019 to two misdemeanors for resisting or obstructing a peace officer and failure to obey a court order. Mathers was given three years probation, which ended early in February 2021, according to court records.
