City of Sheboygan investigating unauthorized access of its network and ransom request

SHEBOYGAN – The city of Sheboygan is grappling with network issues that arose last week and that included the request for a ransom to be paid.

The city said an internal investigation revealed its network had been accessed by an unauthorized external third party and there had been a request for a ransom. The incident was reported to law enforcement.

"We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and incorporating their guidance into our response," the city said in a news release Nov. 10.

According to the release, the network has since been secured and experts are working to conduct a "thorough forensic review" to determine the full scope of the incident.

"Our investigation remains ongoing and at this time we have not discovered evidence that any sensitive personal information has been compromised by this incident," the city said.

"Should we discover an impact to any sensitive personal information, we will notify those individuals as soon as possible and provide them with information and resources to assist," the city added.
