The Ohio Controlling Board approved funding more than $4 million toward improving a multiuse trail at Blackhand Gorge Nature Preserve in Licking County, Ohio Sen. Tim Schaffer, R-Lancaster, announced Monday.

In a news release, Shaffer's office stated the project will reinforce the riverbank at three spots along the 4-mile, multiuse trail at the nature preserve. Riverbank erosion and landslides have destabilized the trail in those areas, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

To improve the riverbank, the project's contractor, Tucson Inc., will construct embankments and a steel-reinforced concrete wall, the department stated in a funding request.

The improvements will "ensure the continued use of this popular scenic trail," according to the department.

"Blackhand Gorge is a beautiful gem in Licking County with a rich history," Schaffer said in the release. "This investment will ensure this amazing place stays accessible to residents and visitors for years to come."

The Advocate could not immediately confirm when the project will begin and whether the trail will be closed during construction, but it is estimated for completion before November 2025.

The department manages the preserve, which spans 957 acres and is about 12 miles east of Newark. The state designated the gorge a nature preserve in 1975.

Schaffer's office also announced funding for other Licking County projects, including $65 million for a new animal disease laboratory at the Ohio Department of Agriculture campus in Reynoldsburg.

The existing lab offers diagnostic tests for hundreds of animals to prevent outbreaks, but the area needs a new facility to improve biosecurity, biosafety and expand testing, according to Schaffer's office.

"I've been proud to support funding for projects that will benefit our farmers and all Ohioans," Schaffer said in the release. "The funds released today will make a generational impact on our agricultural industry, giving our farmers more tools to succeed."
