What you need to know about changes to Sheboygan winter parking

SHEBOYGAN – Several approved changes to winter and snow emergency parking will impact drivers next month.

Updates to the municipal code include shortening the winter season, broadening storm conditions and eliminating effective hours, as approved by the Common Council Nov. 4.

Parking restrictions will remain in effect for streets with "No Parking" signs. Parking is still not allowed on streets marked as snow emergency routes.

Sheboygan shortens street parking for winter to end of March

The winter parking season was changed from Dec. 1 to April 30 to Dec. 1 to March 31 of the next calendar year, "unless sooner terminated by council resolution or mayoral proclamation."

During this time, vehicles should be parked on alternate sides of the street between midnight and 6 a.m.

Vehicles should park on streets with odd-numbered addresses on odd-numbered days and on streets with even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days.

Drivers should parking on the side of the street in accordance with the upcoming day.

Emergency parking restrictions effective during 'winter weather conditions'

Emergency parking restrictions were broadened to general "winter weather conditions," instead of "a heavy snowstorm or blizzard."

Sheboygan street parking changes during declared snow emergency

Before, the overnight winter parking rules were in effect during a snow emergency.

Now, parking regulations will be determined by the calendar date of the snow emergency declaration without hourly restrictions.

"Once the snow plow has cleared snow to the curbing for the opposite side of said street, vehicles shall be relocated to the cleared side by no later than midnight, where they shall remain, when parked, for the remaining duration of the next snow emergency day," the amended language says.

"If a snow emergency is in effect more than 48 hours," the amended language continues, "vehicles shall be parked on the even or odd side of the street corresponding to the calendar date of each snow emergency declaration day but may be relocated to the opposite side once snow is cleared to the curbing."

Sheboygan plans to make declarations lifting snow emergencies

The Common Council or mayor now have to make a declaration to lift the snow emergency, and subsequent parking restrictions, according to the updates.
