‘Mayor Musk?’ Here’s what Elon Musk is doing now that he’s stepping away from DOGE

2 min read

Tech billionaire Elon Musk might be winding down his time at the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency. But he's not exactly stepping away from politics.

He's just ... relocating.

If you drive down a stretch of Highway 4 in South Texas, and keep going far enough, you'll happen across an enormous gold bust of the Tesla founder, SpaceX owner, and social media magnate.

Politico, the publication for political insiders, has the explanation for that ... and more.

Deep in the heart of Texas, Musk is building Starbase, right now a collection of homes and hangars, office buildings and neighborhood streets, the soon-to-be newest town in Texas, Politico reports.

The emerging company town, which is populated almost exclusively by employees of the Musk-owned SpaceX and construction workers, is the site of SpaceX's launchpad for its Starship rockets, and the home-base for the human colonization of Mars, the online news organization reported.

Indeed, a sign reading "Mars-a-Lago," is something of a giveaway. Ditto for the newly paved "Memes Street."

"What's happening here is incredible," Kit Frederic, an Oregon resident who now lives nearby, told Politico. "Someday every state in the union is going to want something like this."

At the moment, the 1.5 square mile site is technically unincorporated local land.

This weekend, however, the 200 or so residents, again mostly SpaceX employees, will vote on whether to officially incorporate to become Starbase, Texas, Politico reported. The move has been underway since late 2024.

It it's successful, the vote would give SpaceX increased autonomy, its own government, and the ability to "build where and how it wants," Politico reported.

And it means that Musk who wielded some heavy clout in Washington, would become its de facto mayor, Politico reported.
