Patient safety concerns at 4 Mass. hospitals, Leapfrog survey shows
Four Massachusetts hospitals, three in Worcester County and one in Middlesex County, are ranked as having low safety grades by LeapFrog Hospital Safety's fall survey .
In a few weeks, the nonprofit will release its next round of safety rankings.
Each spring and fall, The Leapfrog Group , also a nonprofit, enlists a panel of experts to evaluate patient safety at hospitals around the country based on public data and data provided by hospitals.
Hospitals are ranked A, B, C, D or F, with A being the best and F being the worst. No hospital in Massachusetts received an F rank in the fall survey — the lowest possible rank given to a hospital.
The safety grade uses up to 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources, according to its website.
The Spring 2025 rankings will be made public on May 1, according to the nonprofit.
Based on the nonprofit's Fall 2024 rankings, Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial's Medical and University Campuses in Worcester, Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge and MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham were all given the rank of D, according to Leapfrog.
The panel used 22 metrics to determine each hospital's grade, according to the website. The metrics measured are not just patient outcomes but also the safety of each hospital's protocols, its procedures and the environment in general.
A total of 16 Massachusetts hospitals were given an A rank in Fall 2024, according to the nonprofit's website. The A rank is the highest rank a hospital can receive.
