Voters in Plano rejected a suite of five taxes on Election Day that would have helped fund a new billion-dollar hockey home for the Dallas Stars.

Plano's Proposition A would have created new taxes on tickets, parking, hotel rooms, car rentals and the sports teams that would be the arena's main tenants.

The proposition failed in precincts across the city, losing 54.6% to 45.4%, according to preliminary election results. It did, however, find support in a cluster of Collin County precincts on Plano's west side. And in the only Plano precinct to record votes in Denton County, the measure carried with 52% of the vote.

The taxes would not have funded the arena directly, instead using that money to help pay down $700 million in city bonds issued to finance the arena and a complex of restaurants and other entertainment venues.

The NHL team announced plans to leave American Airlines Center in Victory Park after legal issues with the Dallas Mavericks. The Stars planned to lease the new arena for 30 years.

Whether that remains the plan after this election is not yet settled. Stars owner Tom Gagliardi's response Wednesday to The Dallas Morning News : "We'll figure it out."
